In 1719 the princely House of Liechtenstein, which still rules this constitutional monarchy, purchased a strip of Rhine floodplain and adjacent mountains. Because of liberal tax policies and banking laws, this satellite of Switzerland counts more companies than citizens. Prosperous, with no public debt, Liechtenstein has one of the world's highest living standards. Only as recently as 1984 were women allowed to vote in national elections. The citizenry has voted for the country to join the EEA (European Economic Area). |
